After the resolution of the 1967 Six Day War in which Egypt, Jordan, and Syria attacked Israel. They were decisively defeated. The Arab States then determined the use of another tactic. Guerrilla warfare. In March of 1968 in response to years of attacks by fedayeen guerrilla groups operating out of Karameh Jordan, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) entered the the guerrilla capital, engaging Fatah and their leader Yasser Arafat. |

| Following this battle Arafat's stature grew among many disaffected Palestinian's living in Jordan. Which led to the Fattah faction's overtaking of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). The PLO created a state within a state inside Jordan. After hundreds of attacks, with thousands of Jordanian's killed, numerous assassination attempts on the king, and finally the hijacking of three airliners by factions within the PLO (the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP) laid claim to the hijackings), King Hussein declared Martial Law on September 16, 1970. This month notoriously became known as Black September. Thousands of Arabs were killed during the assault by the Jordanian forces. King Hussein regained control of Jordan, signing an agreement with Arafat (Sept 27, 1970) to permit the PLO and it's factions to operate within Jordan, though many still fled elsewhere, primarily Lebanon. Thus began the new generation of terrorism. | |||
| Since Palestinian immigrant Sirhan Sirhan murdered Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy on June 5, 1968, there have been approximately one hundred known terrorist attacks on United States citizens. To date the most horrifying was the thousands of deaths on September 11, 2001. Yet with all this evidence some would portend that the current long over-due response and continued offensive against these Islamic factions is some how irresponsible. I would posit when confronted with the reality of these groups to cause even more death and destruction, any path other than offensive would be derelict. | |||
